Walter Payton broke O.J. Simpson’s single-game rushing record by
Gaining 275 yards in 40 carries as the 5-5 Bears pulled to within one game
Of the Vikings in the NFC Central Division. Payton gained 144 yards on 26
carries the first half and added 131 yards in the second. Payton also broke
Gale Sayers’ club record of 205 yards set in 1968 and matched by Payton earlier in 77.
